Description:
Abstract:
SALSELZ is an ARC/INFO 30 meter region grid (raster file), of land cover type classes derived from the 07/20/91 P41R28 and 07/31/95 P41R29 Landsat TM images. First an image segmentation was run on each scene with a .4 hectare riparian and 2 hectare upland minimum map units. The segmented regions were labeled in a supervised classification. The two scenes were then edgematched together into a single GIS database.

Twenty Four land cover type classes were mapped:

Covertype Definition
-----------------------------------
1100 Urban or Developed Lands
2010 Agricultural Lands - Dry
2020 Agricultural Lands - Irrigated
3100 Xeric Grasslands
3180 Mesic Grasslands
3200 Mesic Shrubslands
3300 Xeric Shrublands
3310 Non-Sage Shrublands
3350 Sage Shrublands
3400 Shrub-Herbaceous Dominated Burn
4203 Mixed Lodgepole Pine Dominated Forest
4206 Ponderosa Pine Dominated Forest
4212 Mixed Douglas-fir Dominated Forest
4230 Douglas-fir/Ponderosa Pine
4260 Mixed Whitebark Pine Forest
4270 Mixed Subalpine Fir Forest
4280 Mesic Forest
4410 Conifer Regeneration Dominated Burn
5000 Water
6200 Herbaceous Dominated Riparian
7300 Rock Dominated or Barren
9100 Snow
9800 - Cloud
9900 - Cloud Shadow

Accuracies range from 40% to 93% for the classes (accuracies were assessed on P41R28 and P41R29 separately). The overall accuracy was 68% for P41R28 and 76% for P41R29. The SALSELZ grid was created using a merge of the P41R29Z and P41R28Z grids. Please see the p41r28z.htm and p41r29z.htm metadata files for more information on how the individual scene region grids were created.

Purpose:
These data were produced to map existing land cover and plant community types in a standardized, consistent manner across the Salmon-Selway ecosystem. This region grid is suited for analysis at the regional, sub-regional, and landscape levels; it can also provide support for many management disciplines, including timber, wildlife, fisheries, and recreation.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Thematic accuracy of the overstory land cover types and forest under- story community types were assessed using a leave-one-out cross-validation test for the training data set of each scene. The cross-validation involved removing the first training observation from the training set and constructing a new classification rule from the reduced training set. This new rule was then used to classify the polygon containing the left-out training observation. The process was repeated until all observations were held out once and used as a singleton test set. The estimated accuracy rate was the percentage of (held-out) observations correctly classified. The manually classified cover types do not have accuracy assessments. A spatial pattern of accuracy was mapped using a bootstrap method which did not require the collection of an independent set of reference data. Interpolation of the mean error estimates at each ground reference point allowed us to map the land cover accuracy across scene. Estimated mean accuracy exceeded 80% in the center (Bitterroot Range), and over 70% in the northwest (Clearwater area), and southeast (Salmon area). Lower estimated accuracies were associated with the headwaters of Moose Creek, Stanley Butte, Upper Lochsa River, and the Bitterroot valley.

User accuracies of land cover types were:

Merge: using customized software, merged all classified pixels using a variable minimum map unit into regions ranging from 0.1 ha to 16675.7 ha. Variable minimum map unit was based on a moving window algorithm comparing surrounding pixel heterogeneity; pixels under the minimum map unit were merged with their most similar neighbors. Created the P41R28Z and P41r29Z region grids.

Makedem: extracted a digital elevation model (DEM) from the WSAL dem database for use during labeling for each region grid.

Makehydrography: extracted a hydrography coverage from the WSAL hydrography database for use during labeling for each region grid.

Buildvat: built an Arc/Info value attribute table (VAT) to hold all items (fields) for which descriptive data could be developed for each region for both region grids. Filled in VALUE, COUNT, LINK, HECTARES, PERIMETER, TM1, TM2, TM3, TM4, TM5, TM6, TM7, MNDVI, ELE, SLP, ASP, and SLPASP fields.

Process_Description:
Labeloverstory: performed supervised classification, labelling each region with overstory lifeform, and forest or non-forest codes. A total of 7206 plots were available for the overstory classification with data collected by the CWWI (n = 1903 plots) and USFS (n = 5303 plots). In general, CWWI data came from ground-referenced points collected in wilderness areas near the center of the scene and USFS data came from existing data sources closer to the edges of the scene. The training data was analyzed for positional accuracy and general lifeform agreement with the imagery. Special attention was given to forest fire burn areas with two post-fire vegetation classes used in the classification; shrub-herbaceous dominated regeneration and conifer dominated regeneration. Training data and spatial classifiers were used in a hierarchical sequence to classify lifeform (forest or non- forest), first, and then forest and non-forest types. Lifeform, (forest or non-forest), was classified using variables: TM1, TM2, TM3, TM4, TM5, TM6, TM7, MNDVI, ELEV, SLP, and SLPASP, Dudani's distance-weighted classifier with a nearest neighborhood size of nine, and a mean group spatial adjustment. Forest was classified using variables: TM4, TM5, TM6, ELEV, SLP, and SLPASP, Macleod's distance-weighted classifier with a nearest neighborhood size of six, and a mean group spatial adjustment. Non-forest was classified using variables: TM1, TM2, TM3, TM4, TM5, TM6, TM7, ELEV, and SLP, resampling distance- weighted classifier with a nearest neighborhood size of six, and a nearest member group spatial adjustment. Filled in the LFCODE, LFPROB, FORCODE, FORPROB, NFCODE, NFPROB fields. Filled in the COVERTYPE field from: NFCODE if LFCODE = 1, FORCODE if LFCODE = 2, or the AGRIC field if AGRIC = 131 through 141.
