Title:
Population Density GIS Database for 52 counties of Montana, Idaho, and Washington
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: raster digital data
Description:
Abstract:
DASY52CO is a population density grid for a 52-county area around western USFS Region 1. It was produced via dasymetric mapping routine. Dasymetric mapping is a GIS process whereby the output mapped areas are not identical to the input enumeration unit. In this case, spatial population density is refined from the enumeration unit (Census Blocks) by use of other GIS filters. The numbers of people counted by the 2000 Census (at the finest Block level) were reassigned to smaller map units in a sequence of filtering steps. First the boundaries of inhabited areas were restricted by eliminating all public lands, Plum Creek Timberlands, water features, certain uninhabited land cover types, land of extremely steep slope, and other local lands designated by the Census itself as non-populated at the Block level (example: urban commercial zones). Excluding these areas in this dasymetric mapping process has the largest effect on the overall new densities in the final product, since density on a per area basis is then far different, particularly in areas where much public land ownership -- common in these 52 counties.
Actual population counts for each Census Block then were redistributed with relative weighting according to the underlying land cover/land use (classified from satellite imagery), and resulting densities were calculated. Population is redistributed on a per-area basis. This is very important: for example, you don't simply assign 35% of the count to Urban covertype region, even if there is just a sliver of Urban. Instead, the area of Urban is calculated and count is redistributed on a per-area basis with a relative formula.
Purpose:
Combine Census data with land ownership and natural resource layers in a GIS to overcome some of the limitations of Census data and more precisely display population density and patterns of human land use.
Produce a better population density model. Can be used for display maps or as input in other analyses such as for land planning, wildfire models, biological habitat models.
Supplemental_Information:
Output is raster format Arc/Info grid (30m resolution cell size), with attached Info database.
This is a region grid: Census blocks are broken up into multiple (up to 5 maximum) raster regions per Census block, for 5 general land cover classes: urban, forested, open, agriculture, uninhabited.
Extent is 34 counties of western/central Montana, 17 counties of northern/central Idaho, and Pend Oreille County, Washington (northeastern corner of WA, which includes portion of Region 1). The area includes all of Region 1 except eastern portion of Custer National Forest (Pryors, Ashland District, Dakotas Grasslands). Also includes central Idaho counties to cover all of Salmon-Selway Ecosystem.
The grid item attribute DENSITY is people per square mile. This is a floating point item, but it is also very easy for user to create an integer grid with density as VALUE (without all the other attached attributes), by using the ArcInfo Grid function: DENSITY_INT = int ( ceil ( dasy52co.density ))
CEIL is used so that it will not truncate numbers less than one-half to zero.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Create a GIS layer of land-use covertypes for populated vs. non-populated types, to filter out types such as water, mines/quarries, and high-elevation alpine types. Simplify the land cover/land use classification to five basic types of Urban, Agriculture, Wooded, Open, or Non-populated. Those simplified classes will be used to re-apportion population within Census Blocks (or excluded as non-populated).
Source_Used_Citation_Abbreviation: land_cov
Process_Date: 2001
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Create a layer for slope from USGS 7.5' DEMs, to be used to limit populated lands for Open and Wooded covertype classes to lands less than or equal to 30% slope, assuming no residential development on lands greater than 30%. This is done to exclude very steep lands that are uninhabited. 30% is chosen as limit based on analyses of numerous sample point data sets. Roughly 70,000 sample points assembled from a few different areas of both east and west sides were analyzed for slope value and then 30% break chosen for full area. At 30%, this included approximately 98% of sample points, +/- approx. 1% for the sample sets. All Urban and Agricultural lands are assumed populated and not limited by slope.

Process_Date: 2002
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Create dasymetric regions of Blocks by using attached covertype code, calculating areas of each covertype, and weighting output to redistribute population and density based on covertype. For any of the 4 general inhabited land cover classes within a Block (urban, forested, open, or agriculture), population count is split up and redistributed for up to 4 regions (or less). Thus, population is redistributed ON A PER-AREA BASIS (very important).
Establishment of relative weighting proportions is based on sample point data sets. Over 100,000 points from a number of point data sets in the region were analyzed to find proportions of the underlying 4 inhabited land cover classes. Proportions differ between the more heavily forested lands in the west and the more open lands in the eastern counties. Thus, 2 sets of weighting proportions are established, split by the Continental Divide, with 1 proportion for the 29 western counties and 1 for 23 eastern counties.
Actual proportions used on a percentage basis for westside-eastside are as follows.
WESTSIDE: urban-open-wooded-agric 35-30-25-10
EASTSIDE: urban-open-wooded-agric 35-45-10-10
Program is run for each and then counties merged back together for full area grid layer.
Process_Date: 2002
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Merge all the processed Blocks back together into whole counties - single spatial files with database for each county. Program set up to create unique code number with which to merge database together (attribute MERGECODE). Likewise, merge all the counties into one area-wide file with database and desired attributes.
Process_Date: March 2002
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Create a new final grid with VALUE item ranging from 1 to 214852 (the number of unique raster regions). VALUE then is just 6 digits, rather than 8 digits produced in previous step from merging with MERGECODE item. Many softwares can handle a grid with value of 6 digits much easier than 8 digits.
